A Whole New Meaning to Accounting

Whenever I tell someone that I am studying to be an accountant in school, the look of sheer terror appears upon their face and the slight mutter of “why are you doing that to yourself?” often escapes their lips. What they don't understand is accounting isn’t sitting at a desk all day crunching numbers like the typical stereotype depicts it as. No, accounting is much more than just that and what Cohen offers is something even more meaningful.

I have only been an intern for about four weeks now and I have learned so much in such little time. I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and interact with two clients who have been nothing but super welcoming and helpful. While at the beginning everything seemed so overwhelming, the more time I spend with my team members, the more I am learning about Cohen’s well-rounded culture and their unique ways of doing things that distinguish them from other firms in the area. While these past few weeks have had their ups and downs, it is nice to feel like I am serving a purpose much greater than the number crunching stereotype mentioned above.

My advice to anyone who is considering joining the Cohen family is to just do it. In four weeks alone, Cohen has taught me so much not only about accounting, but myself as well. This internship experience has made me realize that accounting is the right career choice for me and that I do have the power to make a difference. While I know that I will always get stereotyped as one of those “number crunchers,” I will always be proud to say that I got the opportunity to intern at Cohen and maybe, one day, say that I work full time as well. So my advice to anyone out there doubting themselves or aren’t entirely sure if Accounting is right for them, just know that Cohen brings a whole new meaning to the table. At Cohen & Company, your worth goes far beyond just being a number cruncher. At the end of the day, you are a colleague, friend, and part of one big cohesive family that supports growth and working together as a team. My ending piece of advice for all who are reading this is to enjoy all Cohen has to offer and make sure you are having fun while doing it!
