Advice from an Outgoing Intern
Mar 29, 2021
There’s only one week left of my internship and I can’t believe how fast it has gone by. For any of the future interns out there, I have to say enjoy every moment. Each day I was presented with learning something new. Try to learn, absorb, and apply the information. The time will be over before you know it, and you will look back feeling so much more accomplished than when you started.
Being one of the youngest audit interns, as a sophomore in college, I was very intimidated the first week of training in our breakout rooms. Everyone was talking about how they were excited to graduate and how their last internships went. This first interaction already had me feeling a bit discouraged and that I was behind everyone. What I learned is that no one really knows what they are talking about. All of the interns are new, and in this field of work you are a continuous learner expanding your knowledge every day.
Just some quick advice is:
1. Take thorough notes- keep a journal about the daily discussions with your senior or staff, procedures, or testing documentation. This will make you more efficient in the future when having to reference information from the beginning of your internship.
2. Ask good questions – they always say “there’s no such thing as a stupid question”. While this is true you can make efficient questions so that you are not repeating or asking something that was already answered.
3. Be positive – a lot of times you may feel upset or discouraged with your work, but do not discredit how far a positive attitude can take you!
Enjoy your time here! It will go very fast, but it will be so worth it.
