An Internship Like Never Before

Everyone knows that the COVID pandemic has changed just about every way we go about our daily lives, but Cohen & Co has done everything they can to make things as normal as possible. Going into a virtual internship, there were things that I thought I wasn’t going to be able to do: physically meet people that I’m working with, go into the office, and make lasting connections, to name a few. I’m happy to say that over the past month I’ve found I couldn’t be more wrong about the experience I’m getting from this internship.
This isn't the first internship that I've done virtually so I'm able to make comparisons between the two very different experiences that I've had. I had done a virtual internship over the summer with a different company. That internship was shortened, included no client work, and had me spending most of my days in various zoom calls. I had thought that this was the company making the best out of a bad situation. That is until I started this virtual internship.
I had very low expectations coming into this internship because of how little I had done in my previous one. I knew that busy season would mean that I actually get to do work, but I didn't think it would be as inclusive with people as it is. I've been able to meet with so many different people, both online and in the office, that I actually feel I've made connections within the firm. I didn’t expect to have the opportunity to get close with others because we're all so far apart, but now I feel that I have made connections that will last.
Working in this virtual environment has been a blast. I'm able to reach out and have meetings with people as well as simply send a jabber message to see how someone is doing. Virtual happy hours and weekly meetings have been a great way to consistently connect with people, and to learn more about the firm’s culture. After only two weeks I felt like I was a member of the team, and now, over a month in, it feels like I have been working here forever because of how in touch I feel with the people in this company.
Now that I've done a few returns and have started to get feedback on them, I am able to feel more confident about my work going forward. I have made mistakes, but my overseers are helping me not only to see what I did wrong, but to help me understand what I need to do in order to not make these mistakes in the future. Similar to anyone else, sometimes it can be hard to accept feedback, but everyone here is so invested in helping me learn that it has actually made me excited to go over my returns to find out where I can improve.
This internship experience is one that I will take with me because it has taught me to grow not only as an employee, but as a person. There is still so much time before this internship ends, and I can't wait to see what else I will learn or who else I’ll connect with.
