When I first started my internship with Cohen & Company, I never expected the work environment to be so interactive and friendly. As a tax intern I did not think I would be so closely involved with the other tax staff and the team. While much of the work is independent, I have had the opportunity to work with many different people, and each has been able to help me along the way. Throughout my time as an intern in the Akron office the team aspect of the company has really shined.
One of the best examples of this is our participation in the June Challenge. As a team, our goal was to reach a certain number of signed-off returns by the end of the month, and if we achieved this goal we would be rewarded with a fun team-building event. To track our progress we had an Excel document and even a special bell in the office that we would ring every time we signed off on something. The thing that really surprised me about this challenge was the different levels of staff that were included. From interns to managers, everyone was able to participate and contribute to the overall goal. It was a fun way to get everyone involved and someone was always willing to help. I honestly couldn’t believe that as an intern I was included in this challenge after only being there for about 2 weeks, but it really made me feel like a true member of the tax team.
In the end after a very close finish we were able to complete our goal, and we got to take a Friday afternoon off to go kayaking on the Cuyahoga River. It was so much fun to be able to celebrate with the whole team and get to know everyone better outside of the office. With 14 kayaks and 1 canoe, the Akron tax team was a force to be reckoned with on the river. Throughout the trip we had snacks, a lot of great conversations, and some very memorable moments. One in particular being when one of the team members tried to get fancy and spin around to dodge a tree branch, which caused him to flip his kayak. Overall, I am so glad that I was able to be a part of this challenge because it gave me a great look of what it is like to work at Cohen & Company.
