More than a Job

My internship at Cohen & Company was my first time working at “real” job where the finished project was a tax return for a company/individual and not a clean dressing room or a neatly folded stack of jeans—yes, I used to work in retail. I knew this experience would teach me so much about public accounting, but one of the greatest lessons I learned was that a job would only be what I decided to make it. I chose to make my experience here at Cohen & Company more than just a job.

From day one of training, the staff was so friendly and welcoming, which was a trend that continued throughout the rest of the summer. Staff members invited me to sit with them at lunch, go for walks on nice days and even let me tag along on a couple Starbucks runs. Not only were they helpful when I had questions on projects, but they made me feel like a part of the team instead of just “the intern” who was there for the summer.

They encouraged me to get involved as much as possible, so I attended outside activities like a Rubber Ducks baseball game and volunteered at the local foodbank and YMCA. This made my summer even more enjoyable because I was able to get to know people outside of work and truly understand why Cohen & Company’s culture is known for being so great. If I didn’t step outside of my comfort zone and participate in events like these, I wouldn’t have been able to experience this side of the internship and make the most out of my time here.

Of course, getting the work done is still the priority, but it is also important to enjoy what you do and who you’re working with. The first steps in doing so are simply asking how someone’s day is going, volunteering to participate in extra events and asking yourself, “Can I be doing more?” The days can be long and sometimes you will get frustrated, but when you work with awesome people and take the time to get to know them, you won’t feel as overwhelmed by the tough days and you will you be able to look back on your time at Cohen & Company as an experience that was so much more than just a job.
