The People Who Work Here

I attended Cohen Leadership Day nearly a year ago and now I am in my ninth week of interning.  Whenever I asked people what their favorite part of this job was, the answer was always the same: the people who work here.  This running theme was expressed by first year staff all the way up to the partner level.

On my first day at Cohen & Company, I focused on something basic because I was very nervous: where will I be sitting for the next 4 months? North Bench 9. This really didn’t mean anything to me at the time, but in retrospect has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of my internship. Sitting with other interns and newly hired employees that were learning and, at times, equally as confused as me helped me ease in to the work.  Having this immediate access to support to never having to eat lunch alone, I can honestly agree with everyone I talked to at the firm before starting. The people really are what make Cohen & Company special.

I think my fellow interns can agree that we have all made mistakes throughout our time at the firm, but it has always been emphasized that this would happen, and to learn from our mistakes. Each team I have worked with has been more than willing to take some time out of their day to sit down with me and walk through things I haven’t seen before and answer quick questions when I have them. The people here create a learning environment and realize that at one point they were in my shoes.

This camaraderie extends to outside of the work place.  I have had lots of opportunities to connect with people I wouldn’t normally meet by going out to dinner with partners my first week to going on a client tour with interns from various departments.  I was able to sit down with two partners in a small group and talk about their career paths and gather advice from them.  I’ve now realized that they are some of the friendliest people in the firm and are open to helping anyone who needs it, no matter what their position is in the firm.

Overall, I was made to feel very comfortable because of the friendly culture.  I’m proud to have called the people at Cohen & Company my coworkers for this internship and will carry the lessons I’ve learned here throughout my career!
