Shuffleboard: Interns vs Seasoned Veterans
Jul 16, 2019
Entering a new environment is always difficult, especially at the lowest level. Luckily for us, Cohen & Company strives to make everyone feel included regardless of their position or skillset. As interns, we strive to make good first impressions and to produce quality work, however this can be difficult when transitioning to a new atmosphere. During the first week in my new office, my coworkers made this transition a little bit smoother for me by trying something new with me.
Intramural shuffleboard was definitely not an activity that I envisioned during my internship with the firm, but when I was offered the opportunity to play, I couldn’t think of a reason as to why I should say no. To be honest, I didn’t even know exactly what shuffleboard was, or that there was a place to play it outside of a cruise ship. Once I walked into the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club, I immediately changed my opinion. The atmosphere was electric and everyone was in good spirits. With 4 of us never having played before, and not even completely sure of the rules, we were set to take on seasoned veterans of the shuffleboard league. Somehow - against all odds and in our first games ever, we were able to defeat last year’s reigning champs … just kidding, we got smoked. But! We were ready to go back the next week and lose by a little bit less this time, slowly getting better and on pace to record at least one win by the end of the season. Jokes aside, this experience is something that I would have never gotten if it hadn’t been for my internship with Cohen & Company, and in addition to being thankful for the incredible work experience I am receiving, I am thankful for being introduced to a new hobby.
